Jump Start
Transitioning to high school from middle school can be difficult for almost any student, but it can be especially hard for students who are considered "at risk" for dropping out of school.  The Jump Start program is a summer program for students entering the ninth grade. It is administered through the McNair Educational Foundation at Chase and East Rutherford High School.

Teachers and counselors at the middle school select the students at the end of their 8th grade year.  Students are selected on the criteria that they have the potential to go to college after high school but are not living up to that potential in school up to this point. The program emphasizes team building, self-esteem, and setting achievable goals in both physical and academic areas.

What do students get from Jump Start?

The three-week summer program provides study skills, goal setting and a jump start on their high school academic classes. In addition to academic studies, participants receive structured one-on-one time with teachers to learn about behavior issues and study habits.  There is also a high impact track and field program to help learn about setting goals and achieving them.  8th grade students interested in Jump Start should talk with the guidance counselor at the middle school to see if they are eligible for the program.
